Honda CR-V vs Honda HR-V

Honda HR-V Vs Honda CR-V Review

As popular as the Honda CR-V has become among crossover SUV enthusiasts since its introduction in the mid-'90s, there's one vehicle cut from the same cloth that directly challenges its supremacy. And that vehicle happens to be the HR-V, which, coincidentally enough, is made by the same manufacturer for the CR-V. Honda named it the "Hi-rider Revolutionary Vehicle" for a reason; it's supposed to be a refined version of the much older CR-V. And as the first model year for the nameplate, the 2016 Honda HR-V is indeed a refined version of the Honda CR-V, which, with the 2015 model year, is deep in its fourth generation of production.

Fuel Economy

The main attribute of the younger, more virile HR-V is its fuel economy. Fitted with a small, 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder engine that pumps out 141 horsepower at 6,500 revolutions per minute (RPM) and 127 foot-pounds (lb-ft) of torque at 4,300 RPM, the HR-V has the option of getting a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). This type of automatic gearbox relies on the optimal gear ratio for transferring power to the tires, rather than a fixed number of gears (e.g., six-speed manual, etc.) As a result, fuel consumption is reduced, thus allowing the 2016 Honda HR-V to provide up to 28 miles per gallon (mpg)* in the city and 35 mpg on the highway*. Although you can get a CVT on the 2015 Honda CR-V, the fuel economy is lessened with its larger, 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder; consequently, it provides up to 27 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway.

Interior

Although both vehicles are designed as five-seaters, the 2016 Honda HR-V in particular is designed to provide more cargo room than the 2015 Honda CR-V. Go with the front-wheel drive version, and you'll get 58.8 cubic feet with the seat down, which is the most luggage volume available on the HR-V. Even with the seat in its regular position, the SUV still manages to offer ample space, at 24.3 cubic feet. Thus, the HR-V is perfect for long trips or vacations.
